Newton and Principia
Everyone has heard the classic saying that a trip is about the journey, not the destination. Well, this is very true in the case of people as well. Sir Isaac Newton was a so-called, self-made man, growing up with the odds stacked against him. He was born to a farmer and left full of insecurities about himself and his work in the future due to his mother leaving him at the age of three. Despite these insecurities, Newton pursued an education and carried on into his successful future. Given Newton’s complicated family dynamics, and financial uncertainty, he was also perhaps more able to use his experiences to bring new ideas to fruition and ultimately develop the basis of modern physics.
Newton’s father, also Isaac Newton, died three months before his son’s birth. After this misfortune, his mother left him at the age of three to marry a minister. Left with his maternal grandmother, Newton began school at King’s School, where he continued in his education until the age of twelve. This was when his mother returned and pulled him out of the school in order to attempt to make him pursue a career in farming. However, this career was not long-lived: Newton felt that farming was monotonous, and he quite frankly did not enjoy it and did poorly at it. Even so, the experience was important because it provided him a practical set of problems and challenges that enabled him to begin developing some of his key theories (notablebiographies.com). After finishing in his forced attempt to farm, his uncle, a graduate of Trinity College at Cambridge, convinced his mother to allow him to enter the university. At Cambridge, Newton studied the general curriculum of the time and dabbled in the works of modern philosophers outside of his formal education setting. After three years of study, Newton took a forced two-year hiatus from his formal education due to the black plague. After this, he returned as a minor fellow with the Trinity College of Cambridge. Here, he graduated with his Masters of the Arts and afterwards, proceeded to write De Analysi on his methods of dealing with infinite series. Newton shared this work with his mentor, Isaac Barrow, who shared it with John Collins. He identified who Newton was to Collins, bringing light to his work in the public and gained him Barrow’s position as a Lucasian professor at Cambridge after his resignation (biography.com). Comment by Warren Tormey: Good details, but see if you can move beyond biography here. What’s important about this experience and how does it shape Newton’s scientific development?
This chain of events led to his work with the Royal Society, a group of elite, primarily wealthy men who assisted in the ongoing development of science. While working with the Royal Society, Newton developed staunch rivalries, one of which, perhaps the most prominent, was that of Robert Hooke. Hooke challenged the ideas of Newton, eventually leading the latter into an embarrassed withdrawal from the public eye. This is when Newton did some of his most significant work with his studies of gravity and planetary orbits. These studies were later published in Newton’s work, Principia, which covered much of Newton’s studies, got him major recognition, and gave Hooke ammunition to claim that he had been plagiarized. He did this because in his work, he used the theory of inverse squares to help explain elliptical orbits, which Hooke attempted to take credit for. Though this was “unfounded” by other scientists because of the fact that Hooke could not provide any level of physical proof (biography.com). Comment by Warren Tormey: It seems that most of Newton’s achievements were realized when he was “in withdrawal,” whether as a young farmer or an older scientist. Think about how you might build your analysis around this context.
Furthermore, his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, or his Principia, is best seen as the summation of Newton’s work built into one publication: the laws of motion, relative motion, and the theory of gravity are included. Newton basically used this work to lay the foundation for modern physics through mathematic terms explaining the principles of time, force, and motion. As previously stated, modern physical science is based on these principles and it would not have been possible to develop modern physical science to this level without the work of Newton. This work is essential to the world today as to understand basic physics one must understand the works of Newton, especially the theory of gravity and the laws of motion (howthingsfly.com).
There appears to be a form of trend between great men of history: it is noteworthy that they come from a difficult upbringing and learn to persevere from these early difficulties; Newton is no different. Newton’s rough childhood, complicated family situation, and constant financial uncertainty is what helped him to create his ambitions and to build his drive: it helped him to better accomplish what he otherwise may not have done. Today, Newton is known as this idolized figure in physics, having developed the laws of motion, the theory of relative motion, and the theory of gravity. In short, Newton is typically known as the father and founder of modern physics and it was his past and his struggles that enabled him to acquire such prestige in our world today. Comment by Warren Tormey: This is a solid thesis and repeats what you describe in your introduction. It represents a solid context to “frame” this consideration of Newton’s significant experiences. That said, there’s much more room for the development of this idea within the body of the essay itself. Some attention—perhaps with a look at more detailed sources—would help you to develop these aspects of Newton’s life more fully and to explain how they shaped the scientist that everyone recognizes. You hint at some consideration of these ideas but could do much more to develop them in full detail. You do offer useful insights at points and deserve credit for those. On the basis of the strengths shown here the essay sits within the “B” range.
